Whether your tank is direct expansion or an ice bank tank with a manual or automatic cleaning system, Agroserve will have the solution to keep it “spick and span”:

Best practice for cleaning bulk milk tanks

Milk buyers collect milk from farms on a daily or every other day (EOD) basis. After each collection the tank or silo needs to be clean with an effective detergent and sanitiser.

DX tanks and silos

For DX tanks and silos this could be an alkali or an acid – best practice is to use a three-phase system, comprising of an alkali liquid cleaner, followed by an acid wash and then a final disinfectant. An alternative way to clean a DX tank or silo is to use an acid single-phase detergent/sanitiser (i.e. Circabrite) followed by a final disinfectant.

To calculate the usage rate of chemical for a DX tank or milk silo, work out 1% of the volume of the tank and calculate the amount of chemical required for that volume. For example, a 10,000 litre bulk tank is washed with approximately 100 litres (1%) of water. A chemical used at 0.5% (e.g. Chlorodex) should be dosed at 500ml (0.5% of 100 litres) for a tank of this size.

Ice bank tanks

For ice bank tanks best practice is to use an acid-based cleaner after each milk collection and to use an alkali powder to manually clean the tank on a weekly basis. Psychotrophic bacteria multiply rapidly if the bulk tank is not washed or functioning properly.
